How to get your business recommended by ChatGPT
ChatGPT names businesses it can find and verify across the web. How it picks its sources, and a step-by-step plan any owner can follow to get recommended.
ChatGPT recommends businesses it can find and confirm on the open web. For questions like "best HVAC company near me," it usually runs a live search, reads a handful of pages, and names the companies that show up consistently across websites, directories, reviews, comparison articles and forums. To get named, let OpenAI's search crawler into your site, publish clear answer pages, and earn mentions on the sites ChatGPT reads.
Key takeaways
- For local and "who should I hire" questions, ChatGPT mostly answers from a live web search, which you can influence.
- OAI-SearchBot controls whether your pages can appear in ChatGPT search answers. GPTBot, the training crawler, is a separate choice.
- ChatGPT rarely cites the pages that rank in Google's top 10 for the same question. Showing up across many sources beats one top ranking.
- Third-party pages carry a lot of weight: "best X" lists, Reddit, Wikipedia, review sites and directories.
- Matching facts everywhere (name, location, services, service area) make you easier to recommend.
- Nobody can guarantee placement, and OpenAI says ads don't change answers. Test monthly and fix the gaps.
How does ChatGPT decide which businesses to recommend?
ChatGPT can answer from what the model learned in training, which is months or years old, or it can search the web. OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT decides when to search based on the question. Questions about local services, prices or the "best" option tend to trigger a search, because they depend on current information.
When it uses third-party search providers, OpenAI says ChatGPT typically rewrites the question into one or more targeted queries, and may run follow-up searches after reading the first results. It also uses content supplied by partners. Then it writes an answer and links its sources. OpenAI doesn't name all its providers, and it says ranking depends on many factors and top placement can't be guaranteed.
Why ranking first on Google isn't enough
Ahrefs ran 15,000 long-tail questions through Google and Bing, then asked the same questions to AI assistants (ChatGPT data collected in July 2025). Only about 8% of ChatGPT's in-text citations ranked in Google's top 10 for that exact question (Ahrefs).
The likely reason is query fan-out. One question becomes several searches, and pages that appear across several of them tend to win. Say a homeowner asks for "a reliable heat pump installer in Columbus that offers financing." ChatGPT might search for heat pump installers in Columbus, HVAC financing in Columbus, and reviews of local installers. The company that turns up in all three has the edge, even if it doesn't rank first for any of them.
Which sources does ChatGPT lean on?
Studies agree on the pattern more than the exact numbers. Similarweb's count of U.S. ChatGPT citations from January to February 2026 put Wikipedia at about 13% and Reddit at about 12%, with no other site above 7% (Similarweb). These shares swing from month to month, so treat any single figure as a snapshot. Reddit is a deliberate source: in 2024 OpenAI signed a partnership giving it access to Reddit's Data API to bring Reddit content into ChatGPT.
For recommendation questions, comparison content dominates. In an Ahrefs study of ChatGPT answers to 750 buying and hiring prompts (software, products, agencies), "best X" list articles made up 43.8% of cited page types, and brands placed higher on those lists were more likely to be named (Ahrefs). It didn't cover local trades, but the logic carries over: if a regional magazine's "best roofers in Tulsa" list is what ChatGPT reads, being on it may matter more than another post on your own blog.
For local businesses, OpenAI hasn't published where it gets places, hours or ratings. Yelp disclosed in 2026 that it licenses its business information to OpenAI, and Axios reported in July 2026 that ChatGPT will show Yelp reviews and ratings in answers. Expect listings and review sites to matter more over time, not less.
Why consistent facts matter
ChatGPT builds its picture of your business from many pages at once. If your website says you serve "the Dayton area," an old directory has your previous phone number, and a supplier page uses your old company name, the model has conflicting evidence. It may hedge, skip you, or repeat the wrong detail.
Nobody outside OpenAI can measure exactly how much this weighs, but related research points the same way. In Ahrefs' study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions were the factor most closely linked to appearing in Google's AI Overviews (correlation 0.664), far above backlinks (0.218) (Ahrefs). That's Google, not ChatGPT, and correlation, not cause. It still supports the core idea: being talked about consistently, in many places, is the signal.
Step by step: how to get recommended by ChatGPT
1. See what ChatGPT says today
Write down 10 to 15 questions real customers ask, in their words. An HVAC company might use "who does same-day furnace repair in Dayton" and "is a heat pump worth it in Ohio." A regional manufacturer might use "who makes custom stainless steel tanks in the Midwest." A dental clinic might use "dentist in Boise that takes Delta Dental and sees emergencies."
Run each one in a temporary chat with search on, a few times each, since answers vary. Note who gets named, what's said about you, and which sources are linked. Those links are your to-do list: they show which sites ChatGPT trusts in your category. GrowDesk's free check at https://growdesk.io runs a version of this test for you.
2. Let OpenAI's search crawler in
OpenAI documents separate crawlers for separate jobs (OpenAI):
- OAI-SearchBot finds pages for ChatGPT search. Block it and your pages won't appear in ChatGPT search answers, though they can still show up as plain navigation links.
- GPTBot collects content that may be used to train OpenAI's models. Blocking it doesn't remove you from search.
- ChatGPT-User fetches a page when a person asks ChatGPT to look at it.
Check your robots.txt, then your firewall and CDN, since some security settings block AI bots by default. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply. Our guide to AI crawlers and robots.txt has rules you can copy.
Allow OAI-SearchBot if you want to be recommended. Decide on GPTBot separately.
3. Get every important page indexed
ChatGPT search leans partly on outside search engines. Verify your site in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, submit a sitemap, and fix unindexed pages. Put key facts in real page text, not only in images or PDFs.
4. Make your facts match everywhere
Pick one version of your business name, address, phone, hours, service area and core services. Use it on your website, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, Yelp, the BBB, LinkedIn and your industry's directories (Thomasnet for a manufacturer, insurance network directories for a dentist). Add Organization or LocalBusiness structured data so machines read the same facts; see schema markup for AI search.
5. Build pages that answer questions directly
Give each core service, product line and real service area its own page. Open with a two- or three-sentence answer: what you do, for whom, where, and roughly what it costs or takes. Then add the details worth repeating:
- Price ranges, or what drives the price
- Lead times and capacity ("304 stainless tanks up to 5,000 gallons, shipped in 4 to 6 weeks")
- Certifications, brands serviced, insurance plans accepted
- Warranty terms
- Towns or regions served
- A short FAQ built from the questions in step 1
A dental page that says "We see same-day emergency patients Monday through Saturday and accept Delta Dental, Cigna and MetLife PPO plans" gives ChatGPT something concrete to pass on. "We offer comprehensive dental care" gives it nothing.
6. Publish honest comparison pages
People ask ChatGPT to compare options. Answer those questions on your own site: "heat pump vs. gas furnace in Ohio," "plasma vs. laser cutting for quarter-inch steel," "implants vs. bridges." Be fair, including when a different option is the better fit. Skip mass-producing thin pages: Google's AI optimization guide says scaled pages built to game AI answers break its spam policies.
7. Earn mentions on the sites ChatGPT reads
This is the slowest step and the one that matters most. Work through the sources you found in step 1:
- Ask happy customers for reviews on Google, Yelp and your industry's main review site, and ask them to mention the service and town. Never buy or fake reviews; the FTC banned that in 2024.
- Get onto the "best of" lists that local publications, trade magazines and associations publish. Pitch editors with facts.
- Make sure dealers, distributors, suppliers and partners list you with a correct link.
- Pursue local news, trade press and awards.
8. Join Reddit and forums the right way
Find the threads where your customers ask for advice: local subreddits, trade communities, industry forums. Answer real questions as yourself, say who you are, and follow each community's rules. Planted "I recommend X" comments get removed and spotted.
9. Measure and repeat
Rerun your question list every month. In Google Analytics, watch referrals from chatgpt.com; ChatGPT tags many links it sends with utm_source=chatgpt.com. Add "ChatGPT or another AI tool" to your "How did you hear about us?" question, since many people read the answer and call without clicking.
Expect small numbers at first. SE Ranking's study of 101,574 websites found AI platforms sent 0.32% of all website traffic in early 2026, about three-quarters of it from ChatGPT, while organic search sent 42.75% (SE Ranking). That's why this plan builds on SEO instead of replacing it; see AEO vs GEO vs SEO and how to measure AI visibility. The same work also helps in Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode and readies your site for AI agents.

What doesn't help?
- Keyword stuffing. In the Princeton-led GEO study, it performed worse than leaving the page alone.
- Fake reviews and planted forum posts. They break the rules and get removed.
- Hundreds of near-identical city pages. Thin copies give ChatGPT nothing new to cite.
- Counting on llms.txt. OpenAI hasn't said ChatGPT search uses it; see our llms.txt guide.
FAQ
Can I pay to get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
No. ChatGPT started showing ads in 2026, and OpenAI says ads are labeled, kept separate from answers, and don't influence what it recommends. No agency can guarantee placement either.
Does blocking GPTBot keep my business out of ChatGPT?
No. GPTBot collects content for model training. ChatGPT search uses OAI-SearchBot, so that's the crawler to allow if you want to appear in search answers.
Does ChatGPT use Google reviews?
OpenAI hasn't published where it gets ratings for local businesses. Its search can read public review pages, and Yelp licenses its data to OpenAI, so keep reviews strong on Google, Yelp and your industry's main review site.
How long does it take to show up in ChatGPT?
Technical fixes can show up within days of a recrawl. Getting recommended for competitive questions usually takes months of reviews, mentions and better pages.
Do I need an llms.txt file for ChatGPT?
There's no evidence it's needed. OpenAI's documentation covers robots.txt and OAI-SearchBot, not llms.txt.
